Apricot

Apricot

Plant active — the radiance-and-softness ingredient that helps nourish and revitalise the skin

Common name: Apricot

INCI name: Prunus Armeniaca

Where it comes from

The apricot is a fruit from the apricot tree, a fruit tree now grown in many regions of the world.

In cosmetics, different parts of the apricot can be used. Apricot kernel oil is obtained from the kernels inside the stones and is particularly known for its richness in fatty acids and in compounds naturally present in plant oil.

Depending on the form used in a formula, apricot can therefore bring nourishing, emollient, softening or antioxidant properties.

How does it work on the skin?

The skin needs water and lipids to stay comfortable, supple and soft. When its surface lacks these elements, it can become dry, rough and less radiant.

The lipid components, coming notably from apricot kernel oil, can help soften the surface of the skin. They settle on its surface and help reduce the feeling of dryness, giving the skin a softer feel.

The skin can be pictured as a surface that needs nourishing to stay supple. Apricot oil provides some of the elements that help comfort that surface and limit the feeling of dry skin.

The apricot also contains various compounds naturally present in the fruit, in particular antioxidants. These help protect the skin against the effects of oxidative stress linked to everyday aggressors.

Better nourished and properly cared-for skin can gradually look softer, more supple, more comfortable and more radiant.

Its value nevertheless depends on the form used: apricot kernel oil does not act in exactly the same way as a fruit extract or an apricot powder built into a formula.

Which skin types?

Apricot is particularly suited to:

  • Dry skin : its lipid components, particularly in oil form, help nourish and soften the skin's surface.
  • Dehydrated skin : used in a suitable formula, it helps improve the comfort of skin that lacks suppleness.
  • Dull skin : its antioxidant components and its value in nourishing care can support treatments aimed at regaining a fresher, more radiant appearance.
  • Rough skin : apricot kernel oil helps soften the skin's surface and improve how the skin feels.
  • Skin lacking suppleness : its emollient action helps make the skin softer and more comfortable.
  • Normal skin : can be used in daily care to maintain softness, comfort and suppleness.
  • Tired skin : care containing apricot derivatives can help give a fresher, revitalised appearance.
  • Dry body skin : particularly valuable in care for arms, legs, hands and other areas that tend to lose their comfort.

Depending on its form, it can be used in care products for the face, body and hair, notably in nourishing, softening formulations and those meant to preserve radiance.
