Olive Oil

Olive oil

Plant oil — the nourishing care that helps protect, soften and preserve the suppleness of the skin

Common name: Olive oil

INCI name: Olea Europaea Fruit Oil

Where it comes from

Olive oil is of plant origin. It is obtained from the fruit of the olive tree, grown for thousands of years in various regions of the world, notably around the Mediterranean basin.

The olives are pressed or processed to extract their oil. This oil mainly contains fatty acids, as well as various compounds naturally present in the olive, including antioxidants.

In cosmetics, it is used for its nourishing, emollient and protective properties.

How does it work on the skin?

The skin has a natural barrier that helps it retain water and stay protected. When this barrier is weakened, or when the skin lacks lipids, it can become dry, rough, coarse or uncomfortable.

Olive oil provides lipids that can settle on the surface of the skin and help improve its suppleness. It can be pictured as a thin layer that wraps the skin and brings it more comfort.

It also has an emollient action : it helps soften the skin's surface and improve how the skin feels. Dry skin can thus gradually look softer and more supple.

Olive oil also contains antioxidant compounds that help protect the skin against the effects of oxidative stress caused by certain everyday aggressors.

By keeping the skin's surface better nourished and more supple, it helps preserve the comfort and healthy appearance of the skin.

With continued use, a formula containing olive oil can thus leave the skin softer, more supple, more comfortable and less rough.

Which skin types?

Olive oil is particularly suited to:

  • Dry skin : helps nourish and soften the skin's surface in order to reduce the feeling of dryness.
  • Very dry skin : brings a useful lipid richness to improve the comfort of areas that particularly lack nourishment.
  • Rough skin : its emollient action helps make the skin's surface softer and more supple.
  • Dehydrated skin : alongside hydrating actives, it helps limit water loss by bringing lipids to the skin's surface.
  • Skin lacking suppleness : helps improve the feel of the skin and preserve skin that is more flexible and comfortable.
  • Skin weakened by dryness : helps nourish the skin's surface and maintain a feeling of protection.
  • Normal skin : can be used in daily care to maintain softness, nourishment and suppleness.
  • Skin exposed to external aggressors : its antioxidant compounds can support care meant to protect the skin against environmental factors.

It can be used in care products for the face and the body, particularly in nourishing, protective formulas and those designed for dry skin or skin lacking comfort.
