Vitamin C

Vitamin C

Antioxidant active — the radiance active that helps brighten and even out the appearance of the complexion

Common name: Vitamin C

INCI name: Ascorbic Acid

Where it comes from

Vitamin C is a vitamin naturally present in many fruits and vegetables, notably citrus fruits, kiwi, peppers and certain tropical fruits.

In cosmetics, it is generally used in the form ofascorbic acid or of vitamin C derivatives. These different forms make it possible to use it in formulations suited to the skin's needs and to the stability of the product.

How does it work on the skin?

The skin is constantly exposed to its environment: sun, pollution, dust, temperature changes and other everyday aggressors. These factors can encourage a complexion that looks dull, tired or less even.

Vitamin C acts notably as an antioxidant. Put simply, certain aggressors produce small unstable molecules that can tire the skin's cells. Antioxidants then play a protective role by helping limit the effects of these molecules.

Vitamin C is also involved in the mechanisms that contribute to the sound structure and appearance of the skin. It is notably known for its role in collagen synthesis, a protein important for skin firmness and structure.

It is also used in care designed for pigment irregularities and visible marks, as it can help gradually make the complexion look more even when used regularly in a suitable formulation.

With repeated application, skin treated with a well-formulated vitamin C product can look more radiant, fresher, more even and more glowing.

Which skin types?

Vitamin C is particularly suited to:

  • Dull skin : helps awaken the look of the skin's natural radiance and give it a fresher appearance.
  • Tired skin : helps improve the appearance of skin that looks less radiant or less alive.
  • Skin with an uneven complexion : gradually helps make the complexion look more even.
  • Skin with marks : can support care aimed at improving the appearance of pigment marks and visible irregularities.
  • Skin exposed to pollution : its antioxidant action helps protect the skin against the effects of oxidative stress linked to environmental aggressors.
  • Skin lacking radiance : helps restore a more radiant, more revitalised appearance.
  • Mature skin : its role in collagen-related mechanisms makes it a valuable active in care aimed at preserving the look of the skin's firmness and quality.
  • Normal skin : can be used in a daily routine to keep the skin looking radiant and even.

It can be used in care products for the face and the body, depending on its form, its concentration and the formulation of the product.
