Spirulina

Spirulina

Marine active — the revitalising ingredient that helps preserve the skin's radiance and vitality

Common name: Spirulina

INCI name: Spirulina Platensis Powder

Where it comes from

Spirulina is of natural origin. It is a microalga, more precisely a cyanobacterium, grown in aquatic environments suited to its development.

Once harvested, it is dried and then turned into a powder so that it can be used in various cosmetic formulations.

Its natural richness in proteins, pigments, minerals and antioxidant compounds explains the interest cosmetics take in it for care meant to revitalise and protect the skin.

How does it work on the skin?

Picture the skin as a surface that must constantly face the sun, pollution, wind, cold and other everyday aggressors.

Over time, these aggressors can help give the skin a duller, less fresh and less even appearance. The skin can also lose part of its comfort and suppleness.

Spirulina contains various compounds, in particular pigments and molecules with antioxidant properties, which help protect the skin against the effects of oxidative stress.

Antioxidants can be pictured as small protectors that help limit the action of certain unstable molecules produced notably when the skin is exposed to external aggressors.

Spirulina also provides elements that help keep the skin more comfortable and more supple. Used within a well-balanced formula, it thus supports care designed for skin that appears to lack vitality.

With repeated application, the skin can look fresher, softer and more radiant. Its value therefore lies as much in protection as in the revitalising dimension it brings to formulas.

Which skin types?

Spirulina is particularly suited to:

  • Dull skin : helps revive the skin's appearance and give it a fresher, more radiant look.
  • Tired skin : brings a revitalising dimension to care designed for skin that appears to lack vitality.
  • Dehydrated skin : can support hydrating formulas that aim to preserve the skin's comfort and suppleness.
  • Skin exposed to external aggressors : its antioxidant compounds are useful in care for skin regularly exposed to pollution, sun or other environmental factors.
  • Skin lacking radiance : helps improve the skin's overall appearance and give it a fresher look.
  • Normal skin : can be used in daily care intended to preserve the skin's appearance and comfort.
  • Mature skin : valuable in revitalising formulas that aim to keep the skin looking more supple, comfortable and radiant.
  • Skin weakened by everyday aggressors : supports care aimed at keeping the skin comfortable and preserving its healthy look.

It can be used in care products for the face or the body, depending on the concentration and the formulation of the product.
